Preview: LG Viewty KU990 Phone

Written by jon on 7:28 AM

I rarely write about non-Nokia phones (something that I am seriously trying to change, honest). You can see this just by looking at the number of entries I've accumulated in the "Other Mobile Phones" category: a grand total of 12, and probably a third of those don't even belong there.

Meanwhile, I stumbled upon LG's latest press release for it's newest touch-screen phone: the Viewty. If you can get around the lousy name, the Viewty is actually quite an interesting device.

The new LG Viewty.

This is the picture of a 5.1 megapixel, 120 fps video recorder.

The Viewty isn't your typical media smartphone.

The first tidbit that caught my eye in the press release was the "DiVX Certified" catchphrase. While DiVX (the company) provides a mobile version of its video player and codec for smartphones, it's nice to see the software built-in for once.

So what else is there? The ubiquitous touch-screen, of course. Three inches wide in this case. Not to take anything away from the iPhone, but LG had the touch-screen idea before Apple (see LG Prada).

But quite unlike the Prada, the Viewty comes standard with a 5.1 megapixel digital camera, complete with manual focus, image stabilization, and xenon flash. Oh yeah, it also does 120 fps video recording (DivX compressed?). Crazy.

Aside from that, we get some typical high-end connectivity options: EDGE, HSDPA, and Bluetooth 2.0. Sadly, the phone's tri-band (900/1800/1900) so don't expect it to be hitting the USA any time in the near future.

The LG Viewty will start shipping in mid-October, mainly to Europe.
