Nokia Unveils S60 Touch User Interface

Written by jon on 7:25 AM

At the Symbian Smartphone Show in London, Nokia showcased some new tools for S60 developers and licensees. Chief among them was the addition of the touch user interface and sensor support.

The touch interface will allow both finger and stylus input, as well as "tactile feedback", which basically means the device will let you know - physically - that you're touching something on the screen. For touch-sensitive devices, you'll still be able to run those great Symbian 3rd Edition applications you've grown to love without a change. The only difference is that developers can now add touch features to the app that will take advantage of the hardware if it's there.
As for the second item on the list, Nokia has added support for quite a few sensors (motion, proximity, light) to the S60 interface, which could mean iPhone-like smart features. Most Nokia Nseries devices already have light sensors to adjust the screen brightness so this isn't exactly a ground-breaking feature.
Of course, the announcement provides more evidence that Nokia will be releasing some kind of touch-screen smartphone in the near future.
Nokia's press release ended with a note about Samsung's new S60 devices - the i450, i550, and i560.Nokia's S60 Touch Interface Announced - Engadget
